Doveridge Primary School

Geography

Intent:

Geography at Doveridge Primary School is underpinned by our vision where ‘Together we will succeed to be the best we can be’ and this is at the heart of every aspect of school life.

At Doveridge Primary School all of our children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, our country and their immediate locality.

Throughout their time here, the children will spend as much time as possible exploring the wonderful area they are lucky enough to live in, making comparisons on a national and international level. Our geography curriculum promotes their understanding of diversity and the ways people in different countries use available resources and how this shapes their lives. The children will develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable to other areas of study and to their further education and beyond.

Implementation:
Geography is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school. At the beginning of each topic, children are able to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out. This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different starting points and interests to ensure their learning is engaging, broad and balanced.
